This thesis addresses the problem of detection of high impedance faults (HIFs) in electric radial distribution systems. Faults through high impedance such as dry earth don't have sufficient current to operate overcurrent relays. As a consequence, broken cables laid on the soil, can be left energized for long periods of time. This presents a serious hazard to the general public with risks of electric shock, fire…etc .

 

The proposed scheme had been tested for various simulated testes, which represent all the expected normal and abnormal conditions. The simulator results indicate the excellent performance of the developed relay. Some additional features are included to improve the performance of the proposed relay (for example: relay blocking for C.T saturation and inrush currents).
