The second half of the twentieth century witnessed a significant rise of the Islamist trend in various political, social and cultural aspects of life in Turkey. This phenomenon has given rise to a series of interrelated questions :

- Does the Turkish novel play any role in reflecting the views of this trend?

- Is this trend patently present in the fictional writings of that era?

- What is the role of the writers of this trend? What is their concept of the function of novel as far as the society is concerned?

- What are the most prominent issues dealt with by the writers of this trend?

- What are their most recurrent artistic techniques? And how far they are able to use these techniques?

- What is the impact of these writings on their readers?

The present study is an attempt to find answers to these questions, which are important in evaluating the Islamist trend as reflected in the contemporary Turkish literature during the second half of the twentieth century.

To this end, the researcher adopts an analytical and inductive approach, juxtaposing selected fictional texts, analyzing their content and form, and trying to draw a comprehensive picture of the Islamist trend in the Turkish novel.

The thesis, therefore, is divided into an introduction and three parts followed with a brief conclusion.

The introduction traces the development of the Turkish novel, from its inception in the era of Institutions (Reforms) till the rise of the Islamist trend during the second half of the twentieth century.

The First Part is divided into three chapters, the first of which deals with the historical novel and the adoption of historical events or characters, shedding light on the most prominent novelists who make use of history in their works. The second chapter discusses the sources of the historical novel in the works of the Islamist novelists and the extent to which they are able in getting together the issues of the past and the present in the context of their artistic works. The third chapter investigates major issues in some Turkish historical novels, such as the Islamic unity, the conflict between the West and the Orient, and the problem of treating the Ottoman era and its figures with justice.

The Second Part is devoted to a detailed discussion of major social and political issues that are predominant in the works of the Islamist novelists. The first chapter, for instance, is concerned with the emancipation of women in the contemporary Turkish society, and the attitude of the Islamist novelists towards this problematic issue. The second chapter, on the other hand, tackles the process of westernization and its impact on the Turkish society, explaining how the Islamist writers regard the negative effects of this process, and the alternatives they propose to remedy these shortcomings of this process. The third chapter deals with the issue of secularism and the attitude of the Islamist writers towards the adoption of a secular way of life in Turkey. The fourth chapter focuses on the communist trend in Turkey and the response of the Islamists towards it.

The Third Part is dedicated to an aesthetic study of key novels that represent the Islamist trend. The aim of this part is to examine the fictional components of these novels, so as to explore their impact on the sentiment and consciousness of readers. Accordingly, the first chapter deals with the element of plot, while the second and the third chapters handle the elements of time and setting consecutively. The fourth chapter sheds light on the element of characterization, and the fifth discusses the use of narration and dialogue. Finally, the sixth chapter is an attempt to study the linguistic characteristics of the Islamist novels in hand.

The three parts are followed with a conclusion that summarizes the main results of the research.
