ABSTRACT HEAT WAVES IN JORDAN (1960 – 2000 )
BY :ALI SABRY MAH MOUD
The aim of this research is to study the heat waves in Jordan during the period 1960-2000 , and their influence on the climate condition which affect our life . The best synoptic conditions which are associated with this phenomena were defined , this was done through analyzing surface and upper weather charts , and through determining the general characteristics of the distribution of weather system , including the nature of these systems , their source region and trajectories of their movement . There are five surface pressure system cases the heat waves in Jordan :-
1- Monsoon Trough
2- Sudia Arabia Thermal Low
3- Azore High Pressure
4- Red Sea Trough
5- Khamasine Lows
Radiosond data were employed to plot tephigram charts needed to check the atmosheric condition , and to determine the main characteristics of the air masses in the upper atmosphere , these data were also employed to study and analyze the statistical characteristics and probability of heat wave occurrence in Jordan .
A detailed study was carried out to the exceptional heat wave occurred in Jordan during 28-31 July 2000 . Finally, some of the environmental impacts of heat waves on some sectors in Jordan , as human health and human comfort . Heat wave were associated with the increase of human discomfort .
It is found that Jordan was affected by 135 heat waves during the study period . Highlands were affected by more heat waves than the Ghor and the Badia area , and most of the heat wave were caused by the monsoon low .
