"Effect of Problem Based Learning on the Achievement of Nursing Students in Postpartum Units

"Abstract

Objectives: to study the effect of problem based learning on the achievement of nursing students in postpartum units.

Design: a quasi-experimental study design was used.

Setting: The study conducted in Faculty of Nursing, Ain Shams University, as well as postpartum units of Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital.

Subjects and Methods: a total of 240 students studying obstetric and gynecology nursing course in the 2004-2005 academic year were recruited in the study. There were divided into two groups (120 each) according to the timing of the study. Students attended 1st semester were control group who follow the traditional method of teaching while students attended second semester were studying group who follow PBL. Data were collected through questionnaire sheet, final written exam, observation check list, likert scale and students’ opinionnaire sheet.

Results: in-spit of there were no statistical significant differences in the initial knowledge and practical assessment scores between both groups. There are statistically significant differences between them in knowledge scores regarding post-test and midterm exam and in clinical practice scores regarding after demonstration scores and final clinical practice scores. Meanwhile, there was no statistical significant difference between both groups regarding their attitude score

Conclusion and recommendations: problem-based learning method significantly improves third year nursing students’ achievement in postpartum units than traditional method. Based on the findings the following is recommended; prepare tutors with capabilities and skills required for facilitating and management of group dynamics and use of PBL during the teaching process. Offer more clinical opportunities and resources to facilitate the use of PBL during the educational process.
